What feds have to say about Akira

Akira ransomware has rapidly become one of the FBI’s top five most investigated ransomware variants, targeting U.S. businesses across vital sectors. The group is known for swiftly stealing and encrypting data, leveraging multiple software vulnerabilities to maximize damage and extort victims. Authorities emphasize that Akira's attacks are increasingly complex and costly, posing a growing threat to organizations nationwide. Matt Kapko has more.

Talent, not tech, needed in retail cybersecurity

In this op-ed, Michael Marcotte argues that retailers are increasingly vulnerable to costly cyberattacks, yet most remain dangerously reactive, viewing cybersecurity as a technical afterthought instead of a strategic priority. He calls on the National Retail Federation to lead a sector-wide shift by creating a dedicated cybersecurity talent incubator that develops executive-level cyber leaders tailored to retail’s unique challenges. Marcotte concludes that lasting resilience won’t come from more tools, but from proactive leadership and industry-wide investment in cybersecurity expertise. Read the op-ed here.

Another Oracle victim

The Washington Post revealed it was among dozens of organizations targeted by the Clop ransomware group, which exploited a zero-day vulnerability in Oracle E-Business Suite to steal sensitive personal and financial data on nearly 10,000 employees and contractors. The intrusion, which went undetected for over a month, exposed information such as names, bank details, and Social Security numbers, and was part of a broader extortion campaign impacting companies like Envoy Air and GlobalLogic. Clop is known for exploiting software flaws to carry out mass data theft and blackmail, with ransom demands sometimes reaching up to $50 million. Matt has more.
